What is Kabbalah?

Kabbalah is an aspect of Jewish mysticism. It consists of a large body of speculation on the nature of divinity, the creation, the origin and fate of the soul, and the role of human beings. It consists also of meditative, and devotional practices which were taught only to a select few.  For this reason, Kabbalah is regarded as an esoteric offshoot of Judaism. Some aspects of Kabbalah have been studied and used by non-Jews for several hundred years now.

Kabbalah is most often very misunderstood.  Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism, became a fascination to the public at large thanks to Madonna, Demi Moore, and Ashton Kutcher.  Red strings, and other odd teachings steer the original and authentic kabbalah into the world of the occult.

Is it evil?  Is it satanic?  What is Kabbalah?  I can only answer based on my studies and my perspective.   Authentic kabbalah, was originally reserved for rabbis' over aged 50 whom were considered tzadddik (righteous).  I believe the study of kabbalah is to try to understand the mind of G-d as much as humanly possible, to delve deeply into creation, and t consider just how awesome Abba is.  Tanya, which is also a form of kabbalah teaches to be at a higher level of righteousness (tzaddik) in which peace and love emanate from your being.

Kabbalah also consists of the study of the Hebrew aleph bet, biblical numerics (gematria)etc.  The word gematria gives us geometry.  Once upon a time, the study of math beyond addition or subtraction, was considered esoteric.  The world has not only embraced mathematics, but demands students to learn it before graduating high school or college.

Learning more about our creator is not evil.  Learning the name of G-d is not evil.  As a matter of fact, the study of kabbalah not only makes a person more interesting when armed with fascinating information regarding the Hebrew language, creation, peace, and the true name of G-d, but draws one closer to G-d.

I do not endorse the Hollywood version of kabbalah at all.  If fact, if you wish to order a Zohar set, I would highly recommend a 5 volume set on amazon.com.  The first set I ordered was from kabbalah.com with 23 volumes.  Most of it Hollywood commentary.  I don't recommend that set.  Its overwhelming with commentary rather than the Zohar writings itself.  Rav Berg is also the kabbalah Rabbi to the movie stars.  Another set of Zohar books that I like are the Pritzker Edition.

Sefer Yetzirah and Sefer Bahir are also books that are interesting to read as well as books on Tanya.  The majority of these can be found on amazon.com.

Below are a few tidbits of beginner information on kabbalah.
